On December 18, in the Government House of the Republic, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov took part in a joint meeting of the regional Cabinet of Ministers and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic on the implementation of measures to improve road safety in the republic, to reduce road accidents and to lessen their consequences.

Speaking at the meeting, the regional Minister of Internal Affairs Artem Khokhorin reported that a total of 393 people were killed in road accidents over 11 months of the current year in Tatarstan. He added that 61 people of them were not residents of the republic, while 22 people died because of drivers from other regions.

“The indicators set by the target federal programme have not been exceeded. Tatarstan has shown a noticeable decrease in accidents, maintaining this trend for the last five years. Nevertheless, the number of people died in road crashes has increased in every third region Tof atarstan, while eight regions have exceeded the target programme,” the minister said.

According to him, every third fatality is caused by moving to the oncoming traffic line. To solve this problem, the speaker offered to improve the road network by placing separation fences.

"Every year children are injured in road accidents. Some parents do not want to protect their children and purposefully ignore children's chairs and restraint systems. During the meeting, we have to set measures to improve road safety for the next year," Tatarstan Prime Minister Aleksey Pesoshin, who also took part in the meeting, said.

Speaking at the meeting, Minnikhanov noted that the main thing is solving the existing problems, but not boasting the results. "We have to solve problems, to create road conditions and to control transportation operations. First of all, we have to talk about where to put road signs, fences and other things,” Minnikhanov said.
